RESUMO

Acyl-CoA thioesterase 4 (ACOT4) has been reported to be related to acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity regulation; However, its exact functions in liver lipid and glucose metabolism are still unclear. Here, we discovered explored the regulatory roles of ACOT4 in hepatic lipid and glucose metabolism in vitro. We found that the expression level of ACOT4 was significantly increased in the hepatic of db/db and ob/ob mice as well as obese mice fed a high fat diet. Adenovirus-mediated overexpression of ACOT4 promoted gluconeogenesis and high-glucose/high-insulin-induced lipid accumulation and impaired insulin sensitivity in primary mouse hepatocytes, whereas ACOT4 knockdown notably suppressed gluconeogenesis and decreased the triglycerides accumulation in hepatocytes. Furthermore, ACOT4 knockdown increased insulin-induced phosphorylation of AKT and GSK-3ß in primary mouse hepatocytes. Mechanistically, we found that upregulation of ACOT4 expression inhibited AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity, and its knockdown had the opposite effect. However, activator A769662 and inhibitor compound C of AMPK suppressed the impact of the change in ACOT4 expression on AMPK activity. Our data indicated that ACOT4 is related to hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism, primarily via the regulation of AMPK activity. In conclusion, ACOT4 is a potential target for the therapy of non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes.

RESUMO

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. Its occurrence and progression involve the process from simple hepatic steatosis to metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH), which could develop into advanced liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Growing evidences support that the pathogenesis and progression of MASLD are closely related to immune system dysfunction. This review aims to summarize the association of MASLD with immune disorders and the prospect of using immunotherapy for MASLD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND We explored a new method for measuring the length of artificial stapes during stapedotomy in otoendoscopic middle-ear surgery using a flexible ruler. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on 56 cases of otosclerosis, comprising 56 ears with a follow-up of over 6 months and complete data. Patients were admitted to the Department of Otology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital from July 2020 to June 2022. SPSS statistical software was used for efficacy analysis. The results of different measurement methods on the implantation time of the prosthesis and postoperative hearing follow-up were compared. RESULTS The 56 patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. In 1 case measured by the metal measuring stick, the prosthesis was too short and was replaced during the operation; 2 patients experienced transient dizziness postoperatively, and the other patients had no surgical complications. All 56 patients had varying degrees of hearing improvement after surgery, and no dislocation of the ossicular chain was observed during the follow-up. There was a statistically significant difference in the implantation time of the prosthesis between the different measurement methods (P<0.05). The improvement in hearing in the flexible ruler group was statistically significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The selection of the length of the ossicular prosthesis is a crucial step in the operation and can directly affect hearing outcomes. The use of a flexible ruler to measure prosthesis length can significantly shorten operation time and improve hearing, and the ruler is easily obtainable. It is worth promoting its application in ear endoscopic stapedotomy.

RESUMO

In humans and animals, exposure to changes in internal or external environments causes acute stress, which changes sleep and enhances neurochemical, neuroendocrine, and sympathetic activities. Repeated stress responses play an essential role in the pathogenesis of psychiatric diseases and sleep disorders. However, the underlying mechanism of sleep changes and anxiety disorders in response to acute stress is not well established. In the current study, the effects of restraint stress (RS) on anxiety and sleep-wake cycles in mice were investigated. We found that after RS, the mice showed anxiety-like behavior after RS manipulation and increased the amounts of both non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in the dark period. The increase in sleep time was mainly due to the increased number of episodes of NREM and REM sleep during the dark period. In addition, the mice showed an elevation of the EEG power spectrum of both NREM and REM sleep 2 h after RS manipulation. There was a significant reduction in the EEG power spectrum of both NREM and REM sleep during the darkperiod in the RS condition. The expression of the c-Fos protein was significantly increased in the parabrachial nucleus, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, central amygdala, and paraventricular hypothalamus by RS manipulation. Altogether, the findings from the present study indicated that neural circuits from the parabrachial nucleus might regulate anxiety and sleep responses to acute stress, and suggest a potential therapeutic target for RS induced anxiety and sleep alterations.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) combined with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy on symptoms and signs of patients with suspected laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD). METHODS: This was a prospective randomized controlled study. Seventy patients with reflux symptom index (RSI) > 13 and reflux finding score (RFS) > 7 were recruited and received PPI alone (control group) or TEAS combined with PPI (experimental group) for 12 weeks. Patients in the experimental group received TEAS at Tiantu (RN22), Renying (ST9), and Neiguan (PC6) once a day, five times a week. RSI, RFS, throat pain visual analog score (VAS), and LPR-health-related quality-of-life (LPR-HRQL) scores were evaluated at baseline and after 4 and 12 weeks. RESULTS: The decreases in total RSI and RFS, along with several subscores, were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group after 12 weeks (P < 0.05). The throat pain VAS and LPR-HRQL scores decreased significantly at 4 and 12 weeks after treatment in both groups, with significant differences between the groups (P < 0.001). No severe adverse events occurred, and the rates of adverse events were similar between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Compared with PPI alone, TEAS combined with PPI showed a significantly greater improvement in symptoms, signs, and quality of life in the treatment of LPRD without increasing the occurrence of adverse effects. Therefore, TEAS could serve as a useful and safe treatment method for LPRD. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2100046755.

RESUMO

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is a pathological characteristic of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that has been linked to the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The specific link between CIH, autophagic activity, and NAFLD, however, has not previously been characterized. The goal of this study was to assess the relationship between CIH-induced autophagy and the pathogenesis of OSA-associated NAFLD. Western blotting was used to assess the expression of proteins associated with lipid synthesis, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and autophagic activity. To establish an in vivo model system, C57BL/6 mice were subjected to CIH conditions for 8 h per day over a 12-week period, and were administered chloroquine (CQ) for 1 week prior to euthanization. Levels of serum and liver triglycerides in these animals were assessed, as were proteins related to hepatic autophagy, ER stress, and lipogenesis. qPCR was additionally used to assess hepatic inflammation-related gene expression, while transmission electron microscopy was used to monitor lipid droplet (LD) accumulation and ER morphology. OSA patients and CIH model mice exhibited increases in the expression of proteins associated with hepatic autophagy, ER stress, and lipogenesis. CIH was also associated with more pronounced LD accumulation, hepatic inflammation, and hepatic steatosis in these mice. While serum and hepatic TG and TC levels and serum ALT/AST were increased in response to CIH treatment, the administration of CQ to these mice led to reductions in ER stress-related proteins (XBP1, IRE1α, EIF2α) and lipogenesis-related proteins (ACC, SCD1, FASn), in addition to significantly reducing hepatic inflammation, steatosis, and LD accumulation in these animals. These results suggest that persistent CIH can drive dysregulated hepatic autophagic activity, hepatic steatosis, and ER stress, highlighting potential targets for therapeutic intervention aimed at preventing or treating OSA-associated NAFLD.

RESUMO

RING finger protein186 (RNF186) is dramatically upregulated in steatotic livers. The physiological role of RNF186 in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains obscure. Here, we found that hepatocyte-specific RNF186 knockout (RNF186 LKO ) mice were protected from HFD-induced obesity. RNF186 ablation in liver suppressed inflammatory responses and ER stress and alleviated insulin tolerance, leading to improved glucose and lipid metabolism under HFD conditions. RNA-seq and western blot analyses revealed a significant downregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1, and cluster of differentiation 36 in the liver of RNF186 knockout mice consuming HFD. RNF186 deletion in liver results in less weight gain during HFD feeding and is associated with reduced liver fat, inflammation, and improved glucose and insulin tolerance. In contrast, upregulation of RNF186 in C57BL/6J mice livers impaired lipid metabolism and insulin tolerance. The collective results suggest that RNF186 may be a potential regulator of NAFLD in obesity.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate outcomes in patients presenting with fungus ball of the maxillary sinus (MSFB) and frontal sinusitis who were treated via middle meatal antrostomy alone. METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled study with a parallel group design. Patients with MSFB and frontal sinusitis were randomly assigned to the maxillary middle meatal antrostomy (MMMA) or control (MMMA + frontal sinusotomy) groups. Patient demographics, complaints, imaging findings were analyzed, and surgical outcomes were evaluated using the Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score (LKES) and the 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) questionnaire. RESULTS: In total, 40 patients were separated into two groups, with similar symptoms including nasal obstruction, mucopurulent rhinorrhea, maxillary or frontal pain, blood stained nasal discharge, nasal cacosmia and orbital pain being observed in both groups. Total LKES and SNOT-22 scores were significantly improved in both groups at 6 months post-treatment, with no significant differences in these scores between groups within a mean 6.8-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that frontal sinusotomy is not required to resolve frontal sinusitis associated with MSFB. As such frontal sinusitis appears to be a reactive process caused by fungal ball obstruction, it regresses spontaneously following fungus ball removal, drainage of the maxillary sinus, and middle meatal antrostomy.

RESUMO

Aging, an irreversible and unavoidable physiological process in all organisms, is often accompanied by obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, sleep disorders, and fatigue. Thus, older adults are more likely to experience metabolic symptoms and sleep disturbances than are younger adults. Restricted feeding (RF) is a dietary regimen aimed at improving metabolic health and extending longevity, as well as reorganizing sleep-wake cycles. However, the potential of RF to improve metabolic health and sleep quality in older adults who are known to show a tendency toward increased weight gain and decreased sleep is unknown. To elucidate this issue, aged mice were assigned to an RF protocol during the active phase for 2 h per day for 2 weeks. Sleep-wake cycles were recorded during the RF regime in RF group and control mice. At the end of this period, body weight and blood biochemistry profiles, including blood glucose, cholesterol, and enzyme activity, in addition to dopamine concentrations in the brain, were measured in the RF group and age-matched controls. RF for 2 weeks improved the metabolic health of aged mice by reducing their body weights and blood glucose and cholesterol levels. At the beginning of the RF regime, sleep decreased in the dark period but not in the light period. After stable food entrainment was achieved (7 days post-RF commencement), the amount of time spent in wakefulness during the light period dramatically increased for 2 h before food availability, thereby increasing the mean duration of awake episodes and decreasing the number of wakefulness episodes. There was no significant difference in the sleep-wake time during the dark period in the RF group, with similar total amounts of wakefulness and sleep in a 24-h period to those of the controls. During the RF regime, dopamine levels in the midbrain increased in the RF group, pointing to its potential as the mechanism mediating metabolic symptoms and sleep-wake regulation during RF. In conclusion, our study suggested that RF during aging might prohibit or delay the onset of age-related diseases by improving metabolic health, without having a severe deleterious effect on sleep.

RESUMO

As a calcium ion-dependent chloride channel transmembrane protein 16A (TMEM16A) locates on the cell membrane. Numerous research results have shown that TMEM16A is abnormally expressed in many cancers. Mechanically, TMEM16A participates in cancer proliferation and migration by affecting the MAPK and CAMK signaling pathways. Additionally, it is well documented that TMEM16A exerts a regulative impact on the hyperplasia of cancer cells by interacting with EGFR in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), an epithelial growth factor receptor in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma respectively. Meanwhile, as an EGFR activator, TMEM16A is considered as an oncogene or a tumor-promoting factor. More and more experimental data showed that down-regulation of TMEM16A or gene targeted therapy may be an effective treatment for cancer. This review summarized its role in various cancers and research advances related to its clinical application included treatment and diagnosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess how expansion sphincter pharyngoplasty (ESP) impacts blood pressure (BP) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in hypertensive patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: Patients were separated into two groups based upon whether or not they adhered to antihypertensive drug regimens. Patients underwent 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring before and at 6 months post-ESP, while clinical BP measurements and HRQOL questionnaires (SF-36) were conducted over the course of 24 months post-surgery. RESULTS: We enrolled 62 patients, with 25 and 37 in the medicated and non-medicated groups, respectively. Mean 24-h BP differed significantly, with systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP) decreases of 5.3 mmHg and 2.5 mmHg, respectively (P <0.01). Mean 24-h SBP and DBP decreases in the medicated group were 10.2 mmHg and 4.6 mmHg, respectively (P < 0.001), with significant decreases during the daytime of 8.6 mmHg, 3.0 mmHg, and nighttime of 12.3 mmHg, 7.7 mmHg (P <0.001). In the non-medicated treatment group, 24-h SBP and DBP decreases were 1.9 mmHg and 1.1 mmHg (P < 0.005) with significant decreases in mean nighttime BP values of 3.2 mmHg and 1.9 mmHg (P < 0.001). While pre- and postoperative SF-36 results differed significantly, no differences were observed between the two groups. CONCLUSION: ESP decreases BP and improves HRQOL in OSA patients with hypertension, particularly in combination with antihypertensive drugs.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the between autophagy activity and local immune response in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC). Herein, we observed the expression of autophagy marker microtubule-associated protein light chain 3B (MAP1LC3B), CD8 cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), CD39 (regulatory T cells Tregs) and CD163 (tumor-associated macrophages TAMs) in HSCC, and determined the prognostic roles of CD8+/CD39+ and CD8+/CD163+ in patients with HSCC. The expression of light chain 3B (LC3B) and CD8+/CD39+ was found to be significantly lower in HSCC tissues than in adjacent non-tumor mucosa tissue samples; LC3B expression was positively correlated with the infiltration rate of CD8+/CD39+ in HSCC. Further studies revealed that the ratio of CD8+/CD39+ immune cells was negatively correlated with tumor lymph node metastasis and TNM classification, while the ratio of CD8+/CD163+ immune cells was negatively correlated with TNM classification. Moreover, the expression of LC3B was analyzed and the patients were grouped according to their immune infiltration characteristics. The 5-year cumulative survival rates of LC3B+, CD8+/CD39+, and CD8+/CD163+ patients were significantly higher than those of other group patients. Collectively, our studies indicated that the expression of LC3B in HSCC was correlated with the infiltration ratio of immune cells, and a change in autophagy activity may affect the cellular immunity in HSCC. The ratios of tCD8+/CD39+ and tCD8+/CD163+ may serve as prognostic factors for HSCC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Herein, we report a case in whom two foreign bodies entered the upper mediastinal cavity from the cervical root and subsequently the esophagus. Surgery is the preferred treatment method, and operational procedures depend on the size and location of the foreign body relative to the mediastinal vessels. Rigid esophagoscopy combined with angle endoscopic surgery was selected to avoid surgical trauma and complications. CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old male patient with a 6-mo old history of neck trauma presented with a black-brown foreign body in the lateral wall of the esophagus. Neck and chest computed tomography (CT) revealed that two superior mediastinal foreign bodies penetrated the esophagus diagonally. We removed two foreign bodies through an esophagoscope. Owing to the rigid working channel of esophagoscope and good exposure of endoscope, the risk of injury to the adjacent vital tissues was minimized. Postoperative comprehensive therapies, including antibiotic administration and nutritional support, resulted in a prompt postoperative recovery. Postoperative CT confirmed the absence of a residual foreign body and neck and chest infections. In addition, upper gastrointestinal angiography and gastroscopy revealed the absence of an evident esophageal perforation. The patient received an oral diet and did not experience any complication at the time of discharge from the hospital. CONCLUSION: Rigid esophagoscopy combined with angle endoscopy is an effective, minimally invasive treatment for penetrating neck injuries.

RESUMO

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has inflicted huge threats to the health of mankind. Metal pollution could be a potential risk factor of PTC occurrence, but existing relevant epidemiological researches are limited. The current case-control study was designed to evaluate the relationships between exposure to multiple metals and the risk of PTC. A total of 262 histologically confirmed PTC cases were recruited. Age- and gender-matched controls were enrolled at the same time. Urine samples were used as biomarkers to reflect the levels of environmental exposure to 13 metals. Conditional logistic regression models were adopted to assess the potential association. Single-metal and multi-metal models were separately conducted to evaluate the impacts of single and co-exposure to 13 metals. The increased concentration of urinary Cd, Cu, Fe, and Pb quartiles was found significant correlated with PTC risk. We also found the decreased trends of urinary Se, Zn, and Mn quartiles with the ORs for PTC. These dose-response associations between Pb and PTC were observed in the single-metal model and remained significant in the multi-metal model (OR25-50th=1.39, OR50-75th=3.32, OR>75th=7.62, p for trend <0.001). Our study suggested that PTC was positively associated with urinary levels of Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and inversely associated with Se, Zn, and Mn. Targeted public health policies should be made to improve the environment and the recognition of potential risk factors. These findings need additional studies to confirm in other population.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively investigate the clinical efficacy and larynx preservation of two different treatments: radiotherapy followed by surgery (R+S) and surgery followed by radiotherapy (S+R), in elderly patients with medial wall pyriform sinus cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records from 48 patients over 70 years old with medial wall pyriform sinus cancer who underwent different treatments between 2001 and 2010 were analyzed. Twenty-one patients underwent radiotherapy first followed by surgery (R+S), and the other 27 patients underwent surgery first followed by radiotherapy (S+R). A Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the survival rate. RESULTS: Overall 3-year and 5-year survival rates were 60.4% and 35.4%, respectively. The 5-year survival rates in R+S group and S+R group were 38.1% and 33.3%, respectively, without a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). Also, comparisons of the decannulation rates (64.3% for R+S group vs 50.0% for S+R group) and postoperative complication rates (42.9% for R+S group vs 37.0% for S+R group) between the two groups of patients did not show obvious differences. However, the laryngeal preservation rates in R+S group and S+R group were 66.7% and 37.0%, respectively, with significantly statistical difference between the two groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on the data analysis of 48 patients, the survival rates of elderly patients who underwent R+S or S+R were comparable, but R+S treatment could improve the laryngeal preservation rate of patients. Further study on large-scale sample pool should be performed to confirm this conclusion.

RESUMO

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common endocrine cancer with a significantly increase of the incidence recently. Several cytokines, such as thyroid peroxidase (TPO), cluster of differentiation 56 (CD56), Galectin-3, mesothelial cell (MC), cytokeratin 19 (CK19) and BRAF (B-raf) were recommended to be tested by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for a definitive diagnosis, but were still limited in clinical use because of their relative lower sensitivity and specificity. MicroRNA (miRNA), as a new molecular biomarkers, however, has not been reported yet so far. To address this, hsa-miR-200a-5p, a miRNA, was selected and detected in PTC patients by in situ hybrization with benign thyroid tumor with papillary hyperplasia as a control, and the differential expression of hsa-miR-200a-5p between fresh PTC tissues and control was detected by qRT-PCR. Expressive levels of cytokines of TPO, CD56, Galectin-3, MC, CK19 and B-raf were also detected by immunohistochemistry. The correlation was analyzed by SPSS software using Spearman methods. As expected, the hsa-miR-200a-5p expressive level was significantly increased in PTC patients, compared to that of control, and was consistent with that of TPO, CD56, Galectin-3, MC, CK19 and B-raf. In addition, expression of hsa-miR-200a-5p showed negative correlation to that of TPO (rs = - 0.734; **: P < 0.01) and CD56 (rs = - 0.570; **: P < 0.01), but positive correlation to that of Galectin-3 (rs = 0.601; **: P < 0.01), MC (rs = 0.508; **: P < 0.01), CK19 (rs = 0.712; **: P < 0.01) and B-raf (rs = 0.378; **: P < 0.01). PTC and papillary benign thyroid papillary hyperplasia are difficult to distinguish in morphology, so requiring immunohistochemistry to further differentiate the diagnosis, however, for the existing clinical common diagnostic marker for immunohistochemistry, the sensitivity and accuracy are low, it is easy to miss diagnosis. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a rapid and sensitive molecular marker. So miR-200a-5p can be used to assist in the diagnosis of PTC at the molecular level, and as a biomarker, can be effectively used to distinguish between PTC and benign thyroid tumor with papillary hyperplasia.

RESUMO

Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is the main type of human laryngeal cancer which is one of the most common malignant head and neck tumors and the outcomes of LSCC patients are always poor. The intrinsic molecular mechanisms in initiation, development, growth and metastasis of LSCC remain unclear. Further researches are necessary and urgent. In this article, we examined artemin (ARTN) promoted both cell proliferation and metastasis of human LSCC cells Hep-2 by siRNA mediated ARTN knocking down using MTT assay, cell migration assay and cell invasion assay. Moreover, we examined the expression level of ARTN in LSCC tissues was much higher than that in benign laryngeal polyp tissues. In addition, ARTN was identified as a direct target of miR-223 and miR-223 suppressed the expression of ARTN in LSCC cells. Supplement to our former study, we demonstrated ARTN was oncogenic both in vitro and in clinical tissues. As a result, ARTN could be used as a potential therapeutic target for human LSCC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of harmonic scalpel in neck dissection. METHOD: Available literatures of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, CBM, CNKI, WangFang and VIP published before June 2014 were searched. Inclusion criteria and quality assessment were performed. All data were analyzed by using RevMan 5.2 software. RESULT: Fourteen studies including 632 cases were enrolled. Among them, 319 cases were in harmonic scalpel group and 313 cases in conventional resection group. Compared with conventional resection group, the harmonic scalpel group showed shorter surgery time(weighted mean difference [95% confidence intetval]: -28.01 [-36.83, -19.19], Z = 6.22, P < 0.01)and less intra-operative blood loss (weighted mean difference [95% confidence intetval]: -46.68 [-57.25, -36.12], Z = 8.66, P < 0.01). The number of cervical lymph nodes dissected and the incidence of postoperative chylous leakage were similar in both groups. CONCLUSION: Using the harmonic scalpel in neck dissection was as efficient and safe as that of the conventional technique with the advantage of shorter time of surgery and less intraoperative blood loss.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of preserving laryngeal function for senile hypopharyngeal cancer patientsolder than 65. METHOD: The clinical data of 58 surgery cases of senile hypopharyngeal cancer patients more than 65 years old were colleted and analyzed. Thirty-one cases preserved the laryngeal function, while the rest did not. Perfect preoperative preparation was done before surgery. Surgical resection specimens were sent to frozen-section examination. When the negative incisal margin was confirmed, the defect was repaired by the appilication of local stitching, ribbon muscle flap, major myocutaneous flaps, split thickness skin and replacement of esophagus by stomach. Radical radiotherapy was used after surgery. Survival rate was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Chi-square test was used to compare complications of the two groups. RESULT: The 3 years and 5 years survival rate for all cases were 48.3% (28/58) and 27.6% (16/58), respectively. For patients with laryngeal function preservation, the 3 years and 5 years survival rate were 51.6% (16/31), 29.0% (9/31), respectively. For cases without laryngeal function preservation, the 3 years survival rate and 5 years survival rate were 44.4% (12/ 27), 25.9% (7/27), respectively. The result showed no obvious difference in survival rate between two groups (P > 0.05). Surgery complication rate were 45.2% (14/31) and 40.7% (11/27), without obvious differences between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: It is feasible for senile hypopharyngeal cancer patients to choose suitable operation based on their physical conditions and the tumor extension. The key issues include well perioperative treatment management, correct indications grasp, and intraoperative repair skills improvement.
